Milwaukee Snowfall

Milwaukee Snowfall

I’m not a huge winter person, but snow is definitely pretty. I absolutely LOVE how this gorgeous milestone session turned out! There hadn’t been much snow prior to this session date, so we got outside during this Milwaukee snowfall for these gorgeous shots!

When Carmen’s Mom, Ana contacted me she was hoping for an outdoor location for her daughter’s milestone session. Ana told me they had just moved in Wisconsin a few weeks ago, so naturally I asked where they moved from. I was glad Ana’s answer wasn’t Florida or something haha! She said they had moved from Michigan so I’m glad they knew how the cold and wind is during winter in the Midwest.

It was SO interesting talking to this sweet family. They did in fact just move to Milwaukee from Michigan, but before Michigan they lived in Scotland where Carmen was born. I could tell Ana and her husband had slight accents, but I couldn’t quite figure out what dialect it was. We started talking and Carmen’s Dad is actually from Texas, and her Mom (Ana) is originally from Mexico. Ana had a very mixed Mexican and Scottish accent, it was SO cool!

This sweet 5 year old did such an amazing job in the cold and snow! We had SO much fun, and I think it really shows through her images. This is one of my favorite sessions to date. I love the gorgeous blue coat Carmen is wearing from Scotland, and that awesome fur hat which is Russian.

Ever hear of image stacking? Edit this snowflake along with me…

I decided a few weeks ago to pick up my macro lens, that I haven’t used in a while to try out some snowflake shots. ❄️

Not super easy. A lot of patience is required. 😂

I needed some special equipment to photograph these incredibly tiny and delicate snowflakes.

But it was so worth it. 💯

Since macro photography has a very shallow depth of field, it can be hard to get the entire snowflake on the same focal plane without moving it or having it lay completely flat on my surface. Resulting in some post process image stacking! Taking multiple shots with different parts of the snowflake in focus, then essentially stacking the images on top of each other so the entire snowflake is in focus. 🤗

Although this is a very simple tutorial using only 2 images, and the bottom of snowflake isn’t in focus. It gives you a great appreciation for macro photography, and the unseen beauty of winter in Wisconsin! ❄️❄️❄️

A fun little experiment this morning in the -37 degree weather here in Wisconsin. This happened within about 30 seconds! Yes I have some videos too, but putting together a ton of still images I took was way more fun. ❄️

WOW. 🤩

Not at all client related…. But absolutely worth a permanent spot on my feed!

I was so excited to catch a few shots of this beautiful, elusive snowy owl hanging out in Oak Creek. ❄️These owls come down from the arctic every few years, so it’s pretty rare for it to be hanging around. I had to walk across a frozen field for a slightly closer shot, while giving it lots of space. Of course like a true Wisconsinite I left my house with no hat or gloves in 23 degrees (11 with the wind chill). 😂 It was totally worth the frozen hands!
